Heather Doyle Fraser, Publisher. Writer. Developmental Editor. Creator of The ComPASSIONATE Writer.

Heather Doyle Fraser is a publisher, book coach, editor, and writer whose 30-year career spans both sides of the publishing world — inside the machine and alongside the author.

Heather Doyle Fraser has spent 30 years helping people bring important voices and stories into the world.

She began her career inside traditional publishing, spending 13 years as a development editor at Merrill/Prentice Hall/Pearson, where she developed more than 75 market-leading textbooks across multiple disciplines and mentored the editors who followed her. She learned the publishing business from the inside: how to recognize a strong idea, shape a manuscript, develop an author's voice, understand a reader, and bring a book from concept to finished product.

“I am here to DISPEL the MISCONCEPTION of the TORTURED WRITER.” ~ Heather Doyle Fraser

In 2012, Heather moved closer to the author.

She founded Compassionate Mind Collaborative (CMCollab), bringing together her deep publishing and editorial expertise with a very different way of thinking about the writing process—one grounded in compassion, curiosity, voice, and the whole human being behind the book.

Today, Heather is the publisher and editor-in-chief of CMCollab, a developmental editor, writing coach, educator, and author. She has developed or published more than 30 books and has worked with writers across memoir, creative nonfiction, self-development, leadership, mindfulness, compassion, and other forms of transformational writing.

But the work she is perhaps best known for is The ComPASSIONATE Writer and her Writing Practice Community.

The ComPASSIONATE Writer

Heather created The ComPASSIONATE Writer from a simple but radical belief:

Writing does not have to be a tortured process—and neither does the writer.

For decades, writers have been given two familiar stories: that suffering is somehow necessary to create meaningful work, or that “real” writers effortlessly produce beautiful words when inspiration strikes.

Heather believes there is another way.

Her approach helps writers develop a deeper, more trusting relationship with themselves, their writing, and their creative process. Through compassion, structure, curiosity, and practical support, she helps writers move from idea to manuscript and, when that's their goal, from manuscript to published book—without sacrificing their voice or themselves along the way.

The ComPASSIONATE Writer has now welcomed 14 cohorts of writers, and Heather also works with authors through individual coaching, workshops, retreats, and The Writing Practice community.

In 2026, she joined the faculty of the Omega Institute, where she teaches writers to rewild their relationship with writing and the creative process.

“I believe in the power of the VOICE. Your voice, my voice, and our collective voice.
I live and breathe what I do — coach, write, publish books, teach, sing, perform, create, nurture — I do all of these things with gusto because they are all a part of me.
I want to see your fullness and help you experience what it is like to be seen and heard; and then, I want you to share that VOICE with the world.”
— Heather Doyle Fraser

A Life in Books

Heather is also an author herself. Her books include Freedom: How Teens Can Use Mindful Compassion to Thrive in a Chaotic World and Grow a Purpose-driven Life, co-authored with Christ Fraser, and the 40 Weeks journal series, with her forthcoming book, The Compassionate Writer: Rewilding Your Voice and Your Creative Process, continuing the work she has been developing with writers for years.

Her publishing career has given her an unusual perspective: she understands both sides of the book.

She knows what it means to develop a manuscript from the editorial side. She knows what it means to sit with the vulnerability of creating one from the author's side. And she knows how to hold both the craft and the human being at the center of the process.

That's the work Heather brings to every writer she serves.

And Beyond the Page…

Heather is a writer and creative person in the fullest sense of the word. She sings and performs nationally with the Ladies of Longford, an all-women contemporary Celtic band that includes her mother, sister, and dear friend.

She believes creativity isn't something we turn on when we sit down to write. It's a way of being. And if you hold the creative process with curiosity and compassion, there is always more to discover.
